Golden Eagles Bounce Back To Earn A Split

CHICO -- Cal State LA's baseball team overcame a disappointing loss in the opener of Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader and earned a close decision in the nightcap.

The Golden Eagles fell in the opener to Chico State, 7-6, in 11 innings, but a strong start from Saxon Andross and a second-inning grand slam by Adam Gordon lifted them to a 6-4 win in the nightcap at Nettleton Stadium. Cal State LA (12-13, 11-10 CCAA) and Chico State (14-8, 10-7 CCAA) had to wait through two days of rain before getting two games of a four-game series in on Sunday. The other two games will not be made up.

Cal State LA was actually in prime position to win both games. A three-run home run by Tyler Odekirk in the top of the ninth inning gave the Golden Eagles a 6-2 lead, but the Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extra innings and then pushed a run across in the 11th for a 7-6 win.

Gordon's grand slam was the big hit in a five-run second inning that gave the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead in the nightcap. Andross gave up a pair of unearned runs in the third inning courtesy of three Cal State LA errors, but left after five innings with a 6-2 lead. Nick Moisant took it from there, allowing five hits and two runs over the final four innings and getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam to stand the potential winning run on base.

Alec Daily started the opener for the Golden Eagles and allowed three hits and two runs through six innings. Micah Hee gave up six hits and four runs over the next three innings. Zachary Grande worked a scoreless 10th inning and Dylan Suppan pitched the 11th.

Nate Alam was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, while Jordan Myrow was 2-for-5 with one RBI, Michael Tillman was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Noe Garcia was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Myrow's two-out run-scoring single opened the scoring in the third inning and a run-scoring single by Garcia made it 2-0 in the fourth.

Chico State took advantage of a pair of walks, a hit batter and a pair of wild pitches to score twice in the sixth to tie it, but Alam scored from third on a dropped fly ball to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Odekirk's three-run home run gave the Golden Eagles a 6-2 lead, but Chico State scored four times and tied the game on a two-out hit in the ninth.

The Wildcats got a two-out single in the 11th to win it.

Cal State LA, though, bounced back nicely in the second game. Odekirk singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Myrow in the first inning and Gordon's second grand slam of the year gave the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead in the second. Daily followed with a single and scored on a double by Myrow to make it 6-0.

Chico State, though, scored twice in the third and once more in the seventh to make it 6-3. The first four batters in the seventh reached base, but Moisant got out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam without further damage to keep the lead at three runs.

He did it again in the ninth. Chico State scored once and had the bases-loaded with one out, but Moisant slammed the door shut to earn his first save of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against San Francisco State at 6 p.m.
