LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Stanislaus State off to a strong start on Friday.
Nick Moisant pitched eight outstanding innings and the Golden Eagles backed him with a 16-hit attack in a 10-4 victory over the Warriors at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (8-12, 7-9 CCAA) won its fourth straight game, while Stanislaus State (13-8, 9-6 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Cal State LA broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning and that was more than enough for Moisant, who had his best start of the season. He allowed five hits and only one earned run over eight innings while walking only one and striking out a season-high eight.
Johnny Virgen got the final three outs, two via strikeout, to finish the game.
Jordan Myrow and
Nate Alam had three hits each for the Golden Eagles, while
Tyler Odekirk,
Spencer Sundahl,
Jordan Peabody and
Noe Garcia had two hits each.
Braeden Oki had a pair of doubles and scored two runs for the Warriors.
After Stanislaus State scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, the Golden Eagles took advantage of a big error and bunched together eight hits to score seven times in the second. Myrow doubled with one out to start the rally and he scored when
Michael Tillman reached on a throwing error. Tillman reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Alam. Peabody followed with a single to move Alam to third and Garcia then singled to drive in Alam to make it 3-1. After Odekirk grounded out for the second out,
Adam Gordon delivered a two-run single to make it 5-1. Sundahl added a run-scoring double and
Alec Daily singled in a run to complete the inning.
Cal State LA made it 8-1 in the fourth in a run-scoring double by Sundahl.
Stanislaus State scored three times in the fifth aided by three Cal State LA errors, but the Golden Eagles bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Garcia doubled in one run and Odekirk singled to center for the other.
Moisant didn't allow a hit over his final three innings and Virgen retired all three batters he faced to wrap things up.
The Golden Eagles and Warriors will continue the four-game series with a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
