SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's baseball team came out on the winning side of another slugfest at Cal State San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field on Friday.
The Golden Eagles slugged six home runs, including two by
Eli Orona, and outlasted the Coyotes, 18-10, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State LA (25-22, 22-20 CCAA) evened up the series after dropping Thursday's opener and inched closer to a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Orona hit home runs in the seventh and eighth innings after entering the game as a sub for
Sean Watkins, who also belted a home run, his team-leading ninth of the season.
Spencer Sundahl hit his fourth of the season,
Randy Buenrostro hit his second of the season and
Anthony Moreno hit his first home run of the season.
Cal State San Bernardino (15-33, 15-27 CCAA) also took part in the home run explosion, hitting a pair in the late innings. Tyler Robles hit a grand slam home run in the eighth and Isaiah Carreon hit one in the ninth.
Cal State LA had 18 hits in the game, while Cal State San Bernardino had 13.
Saxon Andross had a strong starting outing for the Golden Eagles, going 6 2/3 innings and giving up eight hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out seven. After allowing a single run in the first inning, Andross blanked the Coyotes until the seventh, allowing the Golden Eagles to build a 17-1 lead.
Robbie Stowell pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs.
Watkins staked the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 lead in the first and, after the Coyotes got one back in the bottom of the inning, Cal State LA erupted for seven runs in the second. Moreno led off the inning with a home run,
Jorge Garcia had a run-scoring single, Sundahl hit a three-run home run and
Noe Garcia and
Anthony Ayala drew bases-loaded walks to give the Golden Eagles a 9-1 lead.
Jorge Garcia scored on an error and Moreno delivered a run-scoring single in the third to make it 11-1.
The Golden Eagles scored an unearned run in the sixth and then five more in the seventh to stretch the lead to 17-1. Orona hit a two-run home run,
Nic Bereaud contributed a run-scoring double and Buenrostro hit a two-run home run.
Orona hit a solo home run in the eighth to complete Cal State LA's scoring.
Cal State LA will conclude the series against Cal State San Bernardino with a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their 15 seniors in between games.Â
