SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's baseball team got some clutch performances late Sunday to earn a doubleheader split Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association action against San Francisco State.
After dropping the opener, 14-7, the Golden Eagles got an outstanding start from
Joey Deceglie and a game-winning single in the ninth inning from
Andre Gregory to take the nightcap, 3-2. Cal State LA (19-13, 16-11 CCAA) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap.
Deceglie allowed only four hits and two runs over eight sensational innings and improved to 5-2 on the season. He walked two and struck out eight and gave the Golden Eagles the big pitching performance they needed to win for the first time in the series.
Back-to-back first-inning home runs from
Sean Watkins and
Jorge Garcia staked the Golden Eagles to a quick 2-0 lead. San Francisco State (13-20, 12-15 CCAA) made it 2-1 on a solo home run by Chris Smutney and tied it in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Smutney.
While Deceglie kept the Gators scoreless from there, the Golden Eagles left the bases loaded in the seventh and left two runners on in the eighth before breaking through for the game-winning run in the ninth.
Eli Orona was hit by a pitch to start the inning, took second on a groundout by
Anthony Ayala and scored on Gregory's single.
George Alamillo came on for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Gators in order for his third save of the season.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the opener and couldn't quite catch up. Gregory hit a two-run home run in the third inning to bring the Golden Eagles to within 3-2 and, after San Francisco State scored four times in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead, got a three-run home run from
Jorge Garcia and a run-scoring single by
Noe Garcia in the sixth to draw to within 7-6.
The Gators, though, responded with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth to put the game out of reach. San Francisco State had 18 hits in the opener.
Gregory was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for the Golden Eagles,
Jorge Garcia drove in four runs and Watkins went 2-for-5.
Cal State LA will conclude the four-game series against the Gators on Monday at 11 a.m.
