Golden Eagles Settle For Split Of Sunday Twinbill

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team scored a season-high 12 runs to take the opener of Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay, but the bats went quiet in the nightcap.

Led by a career-high seven runs batted in by Jorge Garcia, the Golden Eagles took the opener, 12-4, before managing only three hits in a 5-0 loss in the nightcap. Cal State LA (6-7, 3-5 CCAA) lost three of four in the series to Cal State Monterey Bay (11-3, 5-3 CCAA).

Garcia came up huge for the Golden Eagles in the opener and Cal State LA got strong pitching from James Mendez, Kristopher Keach, Gabe Ramos and Robbie Stowell. Garcia delivered a sacrifice fly as part of a three-run first inning for the Golden Eagles, slugged a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Golden Eagles a 7-2 lead and lined a bases-clearing double as part of a four-run rally in the seventh that made it 12-4.

Mendez worked around five walks and five hits and went five strong innings to get his first win of the season. Mendez stranded 10 Cal State Monterey Bay runners in his five innings and left with a 7-2 lead.

Keach allowed two runs over the next two innings and Ramos and Stowell each pitched scoreless innings to wrap things up.

Jacob Tonascia and Kyle Czaplak hit home runs for the Otters.

Tonascia was a one-man wrecking crew in the nightcap, but Cal State LA pitchers bounced back effectively against him after he belted a towering solo home run in the third inning of the opener. Mendez went right after him and struck him out in his next at bat and Keach struck him out looking on a beautiful pitch to strand a pair of runners on base in the sixth in a key portion of the game. That kept the game at 7-3 and Cal State LA broke it open with a run in the bottom of the sixth and four in the seventh.

Garcia ended up 3-for-3 with two runs scored and seven RBI and was a triple short of the cycle. Andre Gregory was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, Anthony Ayala scored three runs, Jordan Peabody was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Anthony Moreno had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in a run.

There was no stopping Tonascia in the nightcap, though as he drove in all five runs of the game with a two-run home run in the first, a run-scoring grounder in the third and a two-run single in the seventh.

Ethan McRae pitched six scoreless innings to get the win and Connor Fabing pitched a scoreless seventh inning. McRae allowed only two hits and struck out six and Fabing allowed one hit and struck out one.

Ayala reached base three times for the Golden Eagles on a single and two walks, while Adam Gordon went 2-for-3.

Saxon Andross allowed seven hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings and George Alamillo gave up a pair of unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Cal State LA will open a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona with a home game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
