Golden Eagles See Season End In CCAA Tournament

STOCKTON -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its impressive late-season run come to an end Friday in an elimination game at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles were unable to get untracked until it was too late in a 16-6 loss to UC San Diego in Banner Island Ballpark. Cal State LA (27-24) fell behind early and never recovered in a season-ending defeat. The Golden Eagles had played well in their first two tournament games, a one-run loss to No. 1 seed Chico State and a one-run win over Cal State Monterey Bay, but Friday simply was not their day.

No. 21 UC San Diego (34-16) scored three runs in the first inning on an infield run-scoring single and a bloop double down the right-field line that scored two and never looked back.

Like they have done a lot this season, the Golden Eagles put together a pair of late-inning rallies. Pinch-hitter Garrett Dean picked up Cal State LA's first hit of the game with a single up the middle with one out in the eighth. The Golden Eagles scored three times in the inning on a two-run single by Christian Broussard, Jr. and a sacrifice fly by Sean Watkins.

Cal State LA then added three more runs in the ninth. Ryan Dixon, in his last collegiate at bat, drilled a towering two-run home run and Mike Alexander, also in his last at bat, drove in the Golden Eagles' final run with a sacrifice fly.

The Tritons scored three times in the first off of Cal State LA starter Saxon Andross, who deserved a much better fate. After Watkins made a sparkling defensive play by throwing out Jack Larsen at the plate with a spectacular throw, the Tritons got the first run of the game on a well-placed single that shortstop Isaac Dominguez did a great job to keep in the infield and plated two more when Keenan Brigman's blooper fell just fair in shallow right field.

With the Golden Eagles trailing 4-0 in the third, Nathan Navarrete was robbed of a home run by UC San Diego right fielder Jack Larsen, who leaped high above the wall to make the catch. In the bottom of the inning, Cal State LA centerfielder Drew Seelman made a diving grab of a line drive by Brigman to help Andross with a scoreless inning.

Watkins made another nice defensive play in the fourth inning, racing into foul territory to catch a fly ball off the bat of Alex Eliopulos with the bases loaded.

UC San Diego's Kyle Goodbrand carried a no-hitter into the eighth when, after Tommy Pincin lined out to center to open the inning, Dean hit a line drive up the middle for Cal State LA's first hit.

In the ninth, Andrew Hermanson beat out an infield single and scored on Dixon's two-run home run. Dean drew a walk, Nathan Navarrete singled and Angel Sanchez walked to set the table for Alexander's sacrifice fly.

Cal State LA finished the season with a 27-24 record and won seven of its last 10 games, including three-of-four regular-season games against UC San Diego.
