LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team put it all together Sunday to pick up an important victory in its series finale against Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles backed an outstanding start from
Greg Humbert with a 14-hit attack that included a pair of home runs from
Sean Watkins and beat the Pioneers, 12-1, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (16-12, 9-9 CCAA) was able to salvage the final game of a three-game series against Cal State East Bay (18-9, 9-6 CCAA). The Pioneers won both games of Saturday's doubleheader.
Humbert was masterful while leading the charge on Sunday. The senior missed all of the 2016 season due to injury and had his best outing of this season against the Pioneers. He allowed only four hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out one.
After Humbert got the first out of the seventh inning,
Justin Davis came one and got the next five outs, allowing only one hit during his stint.
Gabriel Gentner tossed a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Golden Eagles took advantage of a pair of Cal State East Bay errors and scored three times. After the Pioneers got their only run in the fourth to make it 3-1, Cal State LA scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and six times in the sixth to open up the 12-1 advantage.
Watkins hit a pair of home runs, a solo shot in the fifth inning and a three-run shot in the sixth. He leads the CCAA with 11 home runs and he now leads the conference as well in runs batted in with 31.
Nathan Navarrete had a big game as well, going 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
Andrew Hermanson went 3-for-4.
Troy Resch was 2-for-3 for Cal State East Bay and drove in the Pioneers' lone run.
Angel Sanchez was 2-for-4 with three runs scored for Cal State LA, while
Mike Alexander had a double and scored two runs.
Cal State LA extended its 3-1 lead in the fourth thanks to a run-scoring single by
Drew Seelman and a fielder's choice by Navarrete. The solo home run from Watkins made it 6-1 in the fifth and Cal State LA exploded for six runs in the sixth. Navarrete,
Isaac Dominguez and
Christian Broussard, Jr. singled in runs and Watkins drilled a three-run home run to complete the scoring.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a doubleheader at Sonoma State that begins a three-games series.
