Golden Eagles Go Long In CCAA Doubleheader Split

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA used the long ball to take the opener of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Sonoma State, but the Golden Eagles had to settle for a split at Seawolf Field.

The Golden Eagles got home runs from Sean Watkins and Christian Broussard, Jr. and took the opener, 6-2, before the Seawolves scored six runs in the first three innings to take the nightcap, also by a score of 6-2. Cal State LA (17-13, 10-10 CCAA) remain in third place in the CCAA South Division, while Sonoma State (14-12, 10-10 CCAA) stays in fourth in a tightly-packed CCAA North Division.

Broussard had an outstanding opener for the Golden Eagles, belting a solo home run in the top of the first inning and then limiting Sonoma State to just six hits and one earned run over seven innings. He walked two and struck out six and improved to 5-2 on the season. His home run in the first was hit sixth of the season.

George Alamillo tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Cal State LA, while Gabriel Gentner got a bases-loaded strikeout to end the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Broussard singled in the third inning in front of a two-run home run by Watkins, who hit his conference-leading 12th of the season.

After Sonoma State cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth, Cal State LA increased its advantage with two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth. Watkins was walked intentionally to load the bases in the seventh inning and Jorge Garcia followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2. Angel Sanchez had a run-scoring single to complete the scoring in the eighth.

Garcia was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener, while Nathan Navarrete was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Broussard was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Sanchez was 3-for-4 with one RBI in the nightcap, while Watkins was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Drew Seelman was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Isaac Dominguez also drove in a run.

Nathan Adams had an outstanding effort in relief, blanking the Seawolves over 4 1/3 innings on only one hit. He walked one and struck out three. Daniel Ferrell also tossed a scoreless inning, allowing only one hit.

Trevor Adrams got Sonoma State off to a quick start with a three-run home run in the first inning. Matt Hammonds allowed only four hits over seven shutout innings.

Seelman singled and came around to score on a grounder by Isaac Dominguez in the eighth inning and Sanchez grounded out to drive in Watkins with two outs in the ninth. Garrett Dean kept the inning going with a double, but that was the final Cal State LA hit.

Cal State LA will conclude its series at Sonoma State with a single game beginning at 11 a.m.
