Golden Eagles Come Up Short In Saturday Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team came up short in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles had trouble generating offense and fell to the Pioneers by scores of 2-0 and 6-3 in a pair of nine-inning California Collegiate Athletic Association games at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (15-12, 8-9 CCAA) managed only six hits in the opener, but showed some positive signs late in the second game.

Cal State East Bay (18-8, 9-5 CCAA) moved into second place in the CCAA North Division with the two victories.

Christian Broussard, Jr. was outstanding in the opener, allowing only a pair of unearned runs that came across with two outs in the opening inning. He was flawless after that, striking out seven and not walking a batter in a dominant complete-game performance.

Cal State East Bay got a combined shutout from Nick Sergi, who allowed four hits and walked two over five innings and Alex Vesia, who allowed two hits and struck out seven over the final four innings for the save.

Troy Resch and Wyatt Foreman drove in runs for the Pioneers.

Andrew Hermanson and Nathan Navarrete had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-0 in the nightcap, although they made things interesting late. Garrett Dean drove in Navarrete with a double in the sixth inning and Sean Watkins crushed a two-run home run in the eighth inning to make it 6-3. Watkins leads the CCAA in home runs with nine.

Saxon Andross and James Mendez each pitched four innings for Cal State LA in the nightcap and each allowed three runs. Brandon Zavala pitched a scoreless ninth for the Golden Eagles.

Joel Lamont went eight strong innings for the Pioneers, while Andrew Fernandez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

Michael Thomas had four hits for the Pioneers, while Kris Bartlett had two hits and two runs scored.

Isaac Dominguez and Hermanson had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series against Cal State East Bay on Sunday at 11 a.m.
