Golden Eagles Fall Out Of Tourney Chase With Loss

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's late surge for a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament came to an end Friday with a loss to Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles were blanked by the Cal State San Bernardino bullpen over the final 6 2/3 innings and fell to the Coyotes, 8-4, at Fiscalini Field. Cal State LA (15-31, 14-21) needed to win the final two games against the Coyotes (22-26, 17-19 CCAA) to reach the CCAA Tournament.

Christian Broussard, Jr. had two hits and two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Welker had two hits and two runs scored and Paul Martinez had a pair of RBI.

Damion Edmonds went 4-for-4 to lead a 14-hit Cal State San Bernardino attack. Grant Buchanan had three hits and one run scored, while Dylan Lohman had a pair of runs scored and two RBI.

Ralph Ramirez started for the Golden Eagles and allowed nine hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Justin Davis gave up four hits and one earned run over the next 3 1/3 innings and Gabriel Gentner continued his impressive late-season pitching by tossing a scoreless inning with another strikeout.

The Golden Eagles struck first and scored twice in the first inning. Welker singled with one out and took third on a double by Dakota Hernandez. Broussard singled in the first run and Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the second.

Cal State San Bernardino scored three times in the bottom of the second. Lohman doubled in two runs and a bunt single by Edmonds gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead.

Cal State LA regained the lead with two runs in the third. Nathan Navarrete picked up an infield single and took second on a walk to Welker. Broussard singled in Navarrete to tie the game and Welker scored on a fielder's choice by Garrett Dean.

The Coyotes, though, tied the game with a run in the third and took the lead for good with two in the fourth.

Cal State LA managed only one hit over the final six innings.

Cal State LA will conclude its season with a single game in San Bernardino on Saturday at 11 a.m.
