LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team finished its three-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Sonoma State on a down note.
The Golden Eagles, after splitting a marathon doubleheader on Saturday, ran out of steam in the series finale on Sunday and dropped an 8-3 decision to the Seawolves. Cal State LA (7-23, 6-13 CCAA) led 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but Sonoma State (12-14, 10-6 CCAA) scored six runs in its final three at bats to win its second game of the series.
Cal State LA managed only five hits in the game, while Sonoma State had 13. The Golden Eagles left seven runners on base, while the Seawolves stranded 13.
Nathan Navarrete and
Anthony Moreno had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while
Ryan Welker had the other.
Matthew Richards went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI for Sonoma State, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Ryan O'Malley was 3-for-5 with one run scored and Daniel Caresio, Spencer Neve and Tyler Glenn had two hits each.
Christian Broussard, Jr. started for the Golden Eagles and allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Justin Davis worked out a fifth-inning jam for the Golden Eagles and alloed four hits and three runs over 3 1/3 innings.
Merrick Patito,
Holden Berger,
Jesus Farias and
Kyle Villa finished up for the Golden Eagles.
Mitch Coombs tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win for the Seawolves, while Cody Bennett got the final four outs for the save.
Sonoma State scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Cal State LA scored all three of its runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Issac Dominguez dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away for an error and
Angel Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game. Dominguez scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
That lead held up until the seventh when a line drive by Richards just cleared the left-field fence to give the Seawolves the lead. Sonoma State added a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with the opener of a three-game series at Cal State East Bay.Â
