LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got a brilliant pitching performance from
Daniel Diaz and a pair of key sacrifice flies from
Dakota Hernandez and
Christian Broussard, Jr. to win its California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Diaz pitched eight scoreless innings and the Golden Eagles scored twice in the sixth inning to beat the Toros, 2-0, Thursday night at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (11-29, 10-19 CCAA) managed only three hits, but that was enough with Diaz (3-1) on the mound. The senior southpaw scattered eight hits and walked only one while striking out seven in a masterful outing.
Gabriel Gentner retired the side in order in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to earn his fifth save of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (21-22, 14-17 CCAA) also got an outstanding pitching performance from Joe Bresson, who allowed only three hits and two unearned runs in his eight innings of work. He walked two and struck out five.
Miguel Castaneda, Lester Salcedo and Nick Morelli had two hits each for Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Paul Martinez,
Garrett Dean and
Angel Sanchez had the hits for Cal State LA.Â
The Golden Eagles scored the only two runs of the game in the sixth inning without getting a hit.
Isaac Dominguez reached first on an error and
Nathan Navarrete walked.
Ryan Welker then put down a nice sacrifice bunt that was thrown away to load the bases. Hernandez followed with a long sacrifice fly to score Dominguez and Broussard added a sacrifice fly to center to score Navarrete.
And that was it. Diaz struck out five over his final three innings of work, including two in the eighth inning. He got out of a two-on, two-out jam with a pop-up and Gentner came on with an overpowering ninth inning.
