LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had everything clicking on Friday while posting its second straight victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles got more outstanding pitching, a strong defensive effort led by right-fielder
Ryan Welker and a 12-hit offensive attack to beat the Toros, 5-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (12-29, 11-19 CCAA) erased a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to get the win.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (21-23, 14-18 CCAA) scored all three of its runs in the first inning, but managed only three hits over the final eight innings.
Mitchell Moore went eight strong innings to pick up the win. He gave up five hits and three runs while walking two and striking out three.
Gabriel Gentner picked up his sixth save of the season and second in as many games by recording three strikeouts in the ninth.
Paul Martinez was 3-for-4, including a tiebreaking two-run double in the fifth that put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
Moore actually had a chance for an even better start and deserved a much better fate in the first inning. Brady Conlan hit what looked to be a tailor-made double play ball with one out and one on, but it took a bad hop and bounced over shortstop
Isaac Dominguez and into left field. Miguel Castaneda hit a liner to third that Martinez almost made a spectacular play on while leaping high, but the ball glanced off his glove to load the bases. Parker Hokuf singled in the first run of the game, a second run scored on a fielder's choice and a third after an error on a hard-hit ball to first.
The defensive play of the game came in the fourth inning with Cal State Dominguez Hills threatening to increase its lead. Johnny Palmer tried to score from second on a single to right by Adrian Guzman, but Welker fired a strike from right field to catcher
Dakota Hernandez to nail Palmer at the plate.
Cal State LA then struck back for two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Christian Broussard, Jr. singled and took third on a double by Martinez.
Garrett Dean drove in a run with a groundout and
Ryan Dixon doubled in Martinez to make it 3-2.
Cal State LA took the lead for good in the fifth. Dominguez doubled to start the inning and
Nathan Navarrete reached on an infield single. Welker then beat out a beautiful bunt for a single that loaded the bases and Martinez followed one out later with his double to right that put the Golden Eagles ahead.
Moore finished the game strongly, retiring the last 10 batters he faced, before turning the game over to Gentner, who allowed a two-out single but struck out the other three batters he faced.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at noon.
