LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team battled for 24 innings Saturday in a doubleheader against Sonoma State and
Dakota Hernandez made sure the home folks had something to celebrate at the end of a very long day at Reeder Field.
After the Golden Eagles dropped a 6-5 decision in 14 innings in the opener, Hernandez delivered a game-winning single up the middle to drive in Issac Dominguez to give the home team a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the nightcap. Cal State LA (7-22, 6-12 CCAA) had lost five consecutive one-run decisions before turning the tables on the Seawolves in Saturday's nightcap. Sonoma State (11-14, 9-6 CCAA) won the opener thanks to a three-run home run in the ninth inning from Ryan O'Malley and a go-ahead single by Matthew Richards with two outs in the 14th.
The two teams put on quite a show Saturday, beginning with the marathon first game that took more than four hours to complete. The two teams combined for 21 hits, 11 walks, 26 runners left on base and seven errors. After
Ralph Ramirez allowed two unearned runs in three innings of work for the Golden Eagles,
Brandon Zavala and
James Mendez combined to blank the Seawolves over the next five innings. Neither allowed a hit, both walked two and Mendez had four strikeouts over his 3 1/3 innings stint, while Zavala had one strikeout in his 1 2/3 innings.
Gabriel Gentner took a hard-luck defeat, going six innings and allowing four runs while walking one and striking out seven.
Ryan Luna allowed only two earned runs over his five innings for the Seawolves, while DeVon Golden, Jackson Zarubin, Cal Becker and Cody Bennett allowed only one run over the final nine innings of the game. Becker worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings and got the win, while Bennett got the final two outs for the save.
Cal State LA took a 4-2 lead in the fourth when
Ryan Welker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Hernandez walked with the bases loaded to force in another run.
That lead held up until the ninth when Rayson Romero singled sharply to center, Daniel Caresio blooped a single to left and, with one out, O'Malley lofted a fly ball to right field that carried just over the wall for a go-ahead three-run home run.
Cal State LA, though, tied it up in the bottom of the ninth on a run-scoring single by
Christian Broussard, Jr. The final out of that inning was recorded on a base-running miscue and the game headed into extra innings.
Gentner sailed into the 14th inning before O'Malley singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a two-out single by Richards.
Cal State LA got back-to-back walks from
Paul Martinez and
Angel Sanchez with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Bennett got the final two outs to end it.
Cal State LA trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth inning in the nightcap, but Hernandez delivered a one-out single to tie it up.
After Sonoma State took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Matthew Richards, the Golden Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning when
Ryan Dixon doubled and scored on a single by Sanchez.
Cal State LA then got the winning run in the 10th when Dominguez walked, took second on a sacrifice by Sanchez and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Hernandez.
Daniel Diaz got the win after allowing only three hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Mitchell Moore gave up three hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Haydon Turpin allowed three hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings for Sonoma State.
Cal State LA will complete its series with Sonoma State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
