LANCASTER -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up just short of a late-inning rally against Cal State San Bernardino Friday at The Hangar.
The Golden Eagles pushed across a run in the seventh inning and had two on with two outs in the ninth inning before falling to the Coyotes, 3-2, in a game between California Collegiate Athletic Association programs in the Collegiate Baseball Classic. Cal State LA (1-9) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, but battled back to make it a tense game at the finish.
Ryan Welker had two of the four hits Cal State LA collected against five Cal State San Bernardino pitchers in a game that was well-pitched by both sides.
Christian Broussard, Jr. was strong in a 6 2/3-inning stint. He allowed six hits and three runs while walking one and striking out six.
Gabriel Gentner allowed no runs over 1 1/3 innings and
Ryan Dixon worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Golden Eagles. Welker also had a strong game behind the plate, throwing out three Cal State San Bernardino base runners trying to steal.
Don Sullivan allowed three hits and a run for Cal State San Bernardino (7-8) to get the win. Joshua Murtha allowed an unearned run in one inning, Jonathan Tellier retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth, Cory Peterson set down the only batter he faced in the eighth and William Ouellette dodged some trouble in the ninth to record the save.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a run-scoring groundout by Brian Lockey and scored two more times in the fourth. One run scored on a one-out single by Andrew Lopez and the other scored with Lopez playing a key role. With a runner on third, and Lopez on first, he got caught in a rundown between first and second and Dylan Lohman stole home before Lopez was tagged out for the third out of the inning.
The Golden Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the inning when
Nathan Navarrete walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by
Garrett Dean and scored on a groundout to short by
Dakota Hernandez. Cal State LA then made it 3-2 in the seventh.
Justin Davis reached on an infield error and pinch runner
Trevor Meleski took second on a balk. Meleski took third on a groundout by
Angel Sanchez and scored when
Kevin Amezquita struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch.
Cal State LA had a pair of lineouts by Dean and Hernandez in the eighth and got a one-out double by
Paul Martinez and a two-out walk to Amezquita before the Coyotes got the final out.
Cal State LA will complete play in the Collegiate Baseball Classic with a game against the University of British Columbia on Saturday at 11 a.m.
