Golden Eagles Endure Long Day At The Ballpark

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a disappointing finish to a frustrating four-game series against Point Loma on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles, after failing to score a run in two losses in San Diego, saw their pitching and defense falter on Saturday and dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 6-3 and 8-4, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (1-6) has lost six straight games since a season-opening victory at California Baptist.

Point Loma (4-3) rebounded nicely after getting swept in a three-game series at Chico State last week.

The Golden Eagles were in position to win both games, but saw leads get away. Cal State LA led 3-0 after five innings and 3-2 after six before a four-run seventh inning cost them in the opener. In the seven-inning nightcap, the Golden Eagles carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning before two straight errors on sacrifice bunts led to three runs. Point Loma then added three more runs in the seventh inning to complete the sweep.

Christian Broussard pitched six strong innings in the opener, blanking the Sea Lions through five innings and allowing just two runs through six. The Golden Eagle bullpen, though, allowed four runs in the seventh and Cal State LA couldn't recover. Nathan Navarette and Garrett Dean hit home runs for the Golden Eagles to help them to a 3-0 lead. Ryan Garcia and Devin Carter hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh to erase the Cal State LA lead.

Jesus Farias and Holden Berger combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning and James Mendez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Golden Eagles. Dean went 3-for-4 to lead a seven-hit attack.

Ryan Casper pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win for Point Loma. Joseph Keller was 3-for-4 with one RBI and Carter, Derek Slate and AJ Derr had two hits each for the Sea Lions.

Mitchell Moore was strong for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap before the defense betrayed him in the sixth. He allowed single runs in the first and second innings, but blanked the Sea Lions until the defensive miscues in the sixth.

Cal State LA erased a 2-0 deficit with a three-run rally in the fourth. Kevin Amezquita singled in one run and Angel Sanchez had a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

Derr led off the sixth for the Sea Lions with a single and the Golden Eagles then threw away two straight sacrifice bunts, the second of which enabled two runs to score. Carter singled in another run to make it 5-3.

The Golden Eagles got one run back in the sixth on a double by Anthony Moreno and a bunt single by Isaac Dominguez that scored pinch runner Trevor Meleski.

Point Loma, though, got a three-run home run from Garcia to extend its lead to 8-4 and the Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't score.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a pair of games in the Collegiate Baseball Classic at The Hangar in Lancaster.
