RALEIGH, N.C. -- Cal State LA men's basketball team competed well in its third exhibition game in the past nine days against NCAA Division I competition.
The Golden Eagles hung tough with North Carolina State before the Wolfpack pulled away in the second half of a 71-54 victory Sunday afternoon. Cal State LA completed a three-game stretch against UCLA, Cal State Northridge and North Carolina State.
Tahron Morrison had 11 points and three rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Joel Brokenbrough had 10 points, including six from a pair of 3-pointers.
Andre McPhail and
Joshua Munzon had seven points each.
Duce Zaid and
Bobby Miles both had a team-high four assists, while
Geoffrey Frid had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles trailed by just nine points at halftime, 39-30, but the Wolfpack used a 15-0 run early in the second half to break the game open.
A 3-pointer by Brokenbrough and a three-point play by Morrison kept the Golden Eagles within 26-20 and a 3-pointer by
Brandon Hitchman kept the Golden Eagles within 10 at 37-27 late in the first half. A three-point play by McPhail made it 39-30 at halftime.
Frid scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the deficit to 39-32, but the Wolfpack responded with a 15-0 run to take a 54-32 lead. A free throw by Morrison and a later basket by Morrison stopped the run, but North Carolina State kept at least a double-digit margin the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will open its regular season on Friday with a game against Holy Names at California Baptist in Riverside at 5 p.m.
