Box Score 2 HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got pitching contributions from several sources, but not nearly enough offense in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader sweep at the hands of Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles managed only two runs over 18 innings and dropped 4-0 and 8-2 decision to Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Field. Cal State L.A. (14-28, 12-21 CCAA) saw its losing streak extended to 14 games, while Cal State East Bay (25-15, 19-15 CCAA) kept in the running for a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Cal State L.A. used six pitchers in the opener and four -- including two catchers - in the nightcap.
Cody Doyle went 2-for-4 with a double and
David Trejo was 2-for-4 in the opener.
Kyle Peralta and
Trent Zaks each hit doubles.
Cal State East Bay had seven hits in the opener, two from Ryan Kochon, who drove in two of the Pioneers' four runs.
Travis Hawley started and threw two scoreless innings for the Golden Eagles.
David Armas allowed no hits, but one run in one inning while walking four.
Shawn Meusborn tossed a scoreless fourth inning,
Chris Oropesa allowed a run in the fifth,
Adan Cabrales struck out the side in the sixth and
Omar Jimenez allowed four hits and two runs over two innnings. Nick Hudson tossed a complete-game shutout for the Pioneers, allowing six hits while walking three and striking out six.
Cal State East jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap.
Ryan Keller pitched the first four innings for the Golden Eagles and allowed 12 hits and six earned runs. He walked two and struck out two. Jimenez allowed one run in one inning and the Golden Eagles then got three shutout innings from its two catchers.
Ryan Dixon didn't allow a hit over two innings and Doyle allowed only one hit and no runs in one inning.
Manny Acosta was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Casey Ryan was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI and
Steven Luna went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Kelly Starnes was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for the Pioneers.
Cal State L.A. scored its runs in the fourth and eighth innings. Ryan doubled and scored on a single by Luna in the fourth and Acosta tripled and scored on a groundout by Ryan in the eighth.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
