Golden Eagles Fall In Ninth Inning To Gators

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team wrapped up a frustrating four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against San Francisco State with another disappointing loss.
 
The Golden Eagles were swept for a second straight series after San Francisco State rallied for two runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to pull out a 5-4 win at Maloney Field. Cal State L.A. (14-23, 12-19 CCAA) lost its eighth straight game, while San Francisco State (17-21, 12-16 CCAA) won for the fifth time in its last six games.

Cody Doyle went 3-for-5 with one RBI, while Manny Acosta was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Both teams had eight hits in the contest.

Ryan Keller carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but departed after allowing a leadoff walk and hitting a batter with two outs. He went 6 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and two runs. David Armas went 1 1/3 innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Nolan Sheridan worked seven innings for the Gators and gave up six hits and four runs. Taylor Wade allowed two hits and no runs over two innings to pick up the win.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Acosta walked, Doyle had a one-out single and Drew Vanisi drove in Acosta on a fielder's choice.

Cal State L.A. made it 2-0 with a run in the second. David Trejo led off with a walk, Jesus Cuevas singled and Josh Guerra drove in Trejo with a sacrifice fly.

San Francisco State tied it in the seventh when Bryce Cherry delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double.

Cal State L.A. regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Acosta singled and moved to second when Casey Ryan reached on a bunt single. Doyle singled in the first run to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead and a two-out double by Vanisi made it 4-2.

San Francisco State, though, tied it in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Grady Espinosa and a two-out run-scoring single by Mark Lindsay.

The Golden Eagles threatened in the ninth, but Vanisi lined out to right with two on and two out and San Francisco State won it after a leadoff double by Matt Vera and a sacrifice by Wes Carswell that was misplayed by the Golden Eagles, allowing Vera to come home with the winning run.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with the beginning of a three-game series at Dixie State. The series will start with a doubleheader on Friday and conclude with a single game on Saturday.
