Golden Eagles Unable To Hold Lead Against Gators

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a disappointing start to its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles held a 4-0 lead, but the Gators rallied with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to rally to a 5-4 victory. Cal State L.A. (14-20, 12-16 CCAA) lost its fifth straight game and couldn't hold a late lead for the third time in that stretch.

Cal State L.A. had 15 hits in the game, but was blanked over the last four innings. Cal State L.A. got the first two batters on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but was unable to push across the tying run.

Jesus Cuevas went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Drew Vanisi was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. David Trejo, Josh Guerra and Casey Ryan had two hits each.

Ryan Santhon went six innings and gave up eight hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out five. Chris Oropesa allowed three hits and two runs and Adan Cabrales worked a scoreless eighth inning.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Trejo singled in Vanisi and extended the lead to 2-0 lead in the third inning when Cuevas singled in Ryan, who had reached base with a bunt single.

Cal State L.A. then made it 4-0 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Manny Acosta doubled and took third on a sacrifice by Ryan. Cuevas delivered a run-scoring double and scored on a single by Vanisi.

San Francisco State, though, pulled to within 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Carter Loud had a run-scoring double, Trevor Diskin had a run-scoring single and Grady Espinosa had a run-scoring double. The Gators then took the lead in the seventh on a run-scoring groundout by Espinosa and an infield single by Mark Lindsay.

The Golden Eagles then threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't score. With runners on second and third in the ninth, Trejo hit a line drive that was snagged by San Francisco State second baseman  Joe Chedid.

Cal State L.A. will continue the series with a doubleheader at San Francisco State beginning at noon.
