Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got a string of solid pitching performances and a powerful day from catcher
Cody Doyle in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader sweep over Cal State San Bernardino.
Doyle hit a home run and drove in six runs in a 10-4 Cal State L.A. win in the opener and he hit a grand slam as part of a five-run second inning in a 6-3 Golden Eagle win in the nightcap at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (14-15, 12-11 CCAA) bounced back from a loss on Thursday to capture the final three games of the series.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of the opener and got an outstanding start from freshman
Greg Humbert. In his first start of the season, Humbert allowed only six hits and an unearned run in 6 2/3 innings of work. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one.
Travis Hawley and
Ryan Keller allowed only one earned run over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Doyle hit a three-run home run in the third inning, his first of the season, and added a two-run double in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Doyle belted a grand slam home run to cap a five-run second inning. He got hit by a pitch and intentionally walked twice in his final three at bats.
Adan Cabrales allowed only two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings of solid relief to pick up the win.
Chris Oropesa got the final two outs in the sixth inning and
Reed Reznicek tossed a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his first save of the season.
Manny Acosta was 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the opener, while
Casey Ryan was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Rodrigo Martinez added two hits and
Drew Vanisi had a hit and two RBI.
Cal State San Bernardino (9-20, 7-12 CCAA) got two hits each from Nolan Almodovar, William Ouellette, Remington Miller and Spencer Bayless.
Doyle put the Golden Eagles ahead in the opener, 1-0, with a sacrifice fly in the first inning that scored Acosta.
The Golden Eagles added four more runs in the third, one on a run-scoring double by
Kyle Peralta and the other three on Doyle's home run to right.
The Coyotes got a run in the fourth to make it 5-1, but the Golden Eagles got a run in the fifth when Vanisi scored on a wild pitch and two more in the sixth on a two-run double by Vanisi. Doyle's two-run double in the seventh made it 10-1.
Martinez singled in the first run of the second inning in the nightcap and Doyle followed with the grand slam to make it 5-0.
The Coyotes, though, bounced back with two runs in the third on a two-run home run by Nick Oddo. Cal State San Bernardino closed to within 5-3 in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Ouelette, but hopes for a bigger inning were erased when Peralta, in right field, threw out Nick Massari trying to score as well for the second out of the inning. Cabrales then got Almodovar out on a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The Golden Eagles made it 6-3 in the fourth on a fielder's choice by
Trent Zaks and Cabrales, Oropesa and Reznicek blanked the Coyotes the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series at UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles will play single games in La Jolla on Thursday and Friday before concluding the series with a doubleheader at Reeder Field next Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
