Golden Eagles Fall Short In 2014 Home Opener

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had some bright spots in its 2014 home opener, but the Golden Eagles didn't have enough of them to pick up a victory.

The Golden Eagles got offensive production throughout their lineup, but still fell short to California Baptist, 8-5, Monday evening at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (0-3) dropped its third straight game to the Lancers (3-0), but Monday's effort was a big improvement over a pair of disappointing losses in a season-opening doubleheader on Saturday.

Every batter in Cal State L.A.'s lineup either got a hit or scored a run and senior Ryan Santhon was impressive in his return to the mound after missing the 2013 season with injury. The Golden Eagles, though, were not sharp defensively and four errors certainly hurt.

David Armas went 4 1/3 innings in a start that was better than his numbers indicate. Errors in both the second and fifth innings contributed to a pair of three-run innings for the Lancers. He allowed nine runs and four earned runs during his stint.

Santhon was outstanding in his relief appearance. He struck out four and allowed only a bunt single during his 2 2/3 innings of work.

Greg Humbert allowed just one hit and an unearned run in the eighth inning and Marcos Casillas worked a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout.

Adam Hofacket went five scoreless innings in relief to get the win for California Baptist. He scattered four hits and struck out six.

He was backed by an 11-hit attack and a flawless defensive effort by the Lancers.

Manny Acosta was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Cal State L.A., while Cody Doyle was also 2-for-4.

Andy Crowley was 3-for-5 and Mark Sanchez was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Lancers.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff hitter Casey Ryan was hit by a pitch and ultimately scored on a groundout by Trent Zaks. California Baptist struck for three runs in the top of the second thanks to four hits and a pair of Cal State L.A. errors, but the Golden Eagles tied it with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Acosta singled and moved to third on a double by Kyle Peralta. Acosta scored on a groundout by Rodrigo Martinez and Peralta scored on a groundout by Ryan.

The teams traded runs in the third inning to keep the score tied at 4-4. California Baptist got a run-scoring single from Sanchez in the top of the inning and Steven Luna doubled in Josh Guerra in the bottom of the frame.

The Lancers then took advantage of a costly error in the fifth that left the door open to a three-run rally that was short-circuited when Santhon came on to retire the two batters he faced in the inning.

After California Baptist added an unearned run in the eighth and Acosta singled and later scored on a wild pitch for a run in the bottom of the ninth to end the scoring.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at UC San Diego.
