Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was forced to settle for a split in its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles, after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, dropped the finale on Sunday, 14-5, at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (4-6, 2-2 CCAA) had a 3-2 lead after three innings, but Sonoma State (3-3, 2-2 CCAA) scored 13 runs in its final six at bats to even the series.
The Golden Eagles actually outhit the Seawolves, 13-10, but Cal State L.A. pitchers also walked eight and hit three batters. Two Sonoma State pitchers walked only two.
Casey Ryan went 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Golden Eagles, while
Manny Acosta,
Kyle Peralta and
Trent Zaks each had a pair of hits.
Cody Doyle drove in two runs.
Sonoma State's Eric Ehlow had a pair of hits and three RBI for the Seawolves, while Garrett Schwartz had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Justin Serrao had a home run and three RBI for Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the second inning when
Jesus Cuevas reached on an infield single and later scored on a hit by
Trent Zaks. Sonoma State took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Serrao in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Doyle.
The Seawolves took the lead for good in the fourth inning by scoring four times. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and another walk forced in the tying run. Jordan The go-ahead run scored on a fielder's choice, another run scored on a groundout and Serrao grounded a single through the left side to make it 6-3.
Sonoma State scored two more runs in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Garrett Schwartz and a single by Ehlow to take an 8-3 lead. Cal State L.A. got a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a run-scoring single by
Kyle Peralta, but the Seawolves answered with two more runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to break the game open.
Cal State L.A. got its final run in the ninth inning on a run-scoring groundout by
Ryan Dixon.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay.
