Box Score STOCKTON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team will continue playing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament thanks to an explosive effort in an elimination game Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles pounded out 21 hits to back a complete-game pitching effort from
David Armas and beat the Otters, 14-3, at Banner Island Ballpark. Cal State L.A. will advance to face Sonoma State in a game scheduled to begin around 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles need to win to force a winner-takes-all championship game on Sunday. A Sonoma State win tonight gives the Seawolves the tournament title.
Jeremy Weber went 3-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Golden Eagles. Weber was one of five Golden Eagles to collect three hits in the game.
Tyler Christian was 3-for-5 with two RBI,
Ryan Cooperstone was 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI,
Niko Garcia was 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI and
Casey Ryan was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
James Wharton and #Manny Acosta# had two hits each and
Scott Masik scored three times and drove in two runs.
Armas pitched a gutty complete-game on a hot afternoon in Stockton. He limited the Otters (38-15) to one run through the first five innings. Cal State L.A. took the lead with two runs in the fourth on run-scoring hits by Cooperstone and Garcia and extended it to 5-1 with three runs in the fifth.
Then, after Cal State Monterey Bay pulled to within 5-3 in the top of the sixth, Cal State L.A. got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring groundout by Masik and then put the game out of reach with seven runs in the seventh. All seven runs in the inning came with two outs.
Armas blanked the Otters over the next three innings to record his eighth win of the season.
