Golden Eagles Have A Rough Day At Sonoma State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an Saturday in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles fell  behind early in both games and lost California Collegiate Athletic Association decisions by scores of 7-3 and 9-0. Cal State L.A. (26-15, 23-8 CCAA) fell out of a first-place tie with Chico State with the losses.

Sonoma State (26-15, 18-13 CCAA) strengthened its hold on fourth place in the conference with the sweep.

The results continued an unusual pattern for Cal State L.A. in conference doubleheaders. The Golden Eagles have yet to split a conference doubleheader. They have swept five (against San Francisco State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State East Bay) and been swept in three (Cal State Monterey Bay, UC San Diego and Sonoma State).

Saturday was a long day in all departments for the Golden Eagles, who managed only six hits in the opener and then went down without a run on only three hits in the seven-inning nightcap. The defense wasn't much better, committing five errors in the two games.

Cody Doyle was 3-for-3 in the opener and drove in two of the Golden Eagles' three runs. Niko Garcia also had a run-scoring single. David Armas got the start and allowed six hits and four earned runs in seven innings. Adan Cabrales surrendered two runs in the eighth inning.

The Golden Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk by Scott Masik and a run-scoring double by Doyle.

Sonoma State, though, took the lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Steven Filippi and never looked back. Filippi added a sacrifice fly as part of a two-run second inning rally that gave the Seawolves a 4-1 lead.

Doyle had a run-scoring double in the fifth to drive in Jeremy Weber and make the score 5-2, but Sonoma State got two more runs in the eighth to take a 7-2 lead. Cal State L.A. rallied in the ninth inning and threatened to tie the game. Doyle and Tyler Christian singled and Garcia delivered a run-scoring single. Jordan Castro was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate with one out, but Casey Ryan lined a shot to second that was turned into a game-ending double play.

The Golden Eagles fell into an early hole in the nightcap and never could get any offense generated. James Wharton had two of the Golden Eagles' three hits and Steven Luna had the other. Brandon Quintero worked five innings for Cal State L.A., while Shawn Meusborn allowed one unearned run in the sixth.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at Sonoma State beginning at 11 a.m.
