Box Score ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Sonoma State off to a successful start.
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 4-3 deficit after six innings and won their 10th straight game, 6-4, over the Seawolves Friday afternoon. Cal State L.A. (26-13, 23-6 CCAA) tied the game on a run-scoring groundout by
Casey Ryan in the seventh and got a go-ahead two-run double from
Tyler Christian in the eighth.
Cedar Morgan pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win, while
Ryan Cooperstone retired Sonoma State in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Cal State L.A. got home runs from
Cody Doyle and
Jeremy Weber, while Sonoma State (24-15, 16-13 CCAA) got a two-run home run from Garrett Schwartz.
Jordan Sechler started for the Golden Eagles and allowed five hits and four runs through six innings. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and blanked the Seawolves into the fifth inning.
Doyle hit a solo home run to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second and Weber followed a walk to
Scott Masik with a two-run home run in the third to make it 3-0.
Sonoma State broke through with a run in the fifth inning and threatened for more. Marcus Kimura delivered a run-scoring single to right-center, but a relay from
Manny Acosta to
Tyler Christian to Doyle cut down Jackson Stogner trying to score and preserved a 3-1 Cal State L.A. lead.
The Seawolves, though, came back in the sixth inning and scored three times to take the lead. Schwartz hit a two-run home run to tie and the Seawolves took a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly by Justin Serrao.
Cal State L.A. responded with runs in the next two innings to regain the lead. Ryan's run-scoring groundout tied it in the seventh at 4-4. Then, after
James Wharton struck out but reached first on a wild pitch and Doyle walked, Christian followed with his game-winning double to right-center.
Morgan, who retired the Seawolves in order in the seventh, did the same in the eighth and the Golden Eagles took their 6-4 lead into the ninth. Cooperstone, who pitched five scoreless innings of relief last Friday in a 12-inning win over Cal State East Bay in his last appearance, worked around a one-out walk in the ninth for his first save.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Sonoma State beginning at 11 a.m.
