LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team had a much better result in its second meeting with new NCAA Division II West Region foe Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles took two of the three doubles contests and then won the top four singles matches to post a 6-3 win over Azusa Pacific Monday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-8) is ranked 25th in the nation, while Azusa Pacific (13-4) is ranked 24th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
Cal State L.A. lost the first meeting between the two programs in Azusa, 7-2, after dropping all three doubles contests. In the rematch,
Christie Lau and
Leora Hemmerich defeated Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Jill Sangria and
Tiffani Shaik won at No. 2 doubles, defeating Azusa Pacific's Lindsey Yeom and Kim Koetterheinrich, 8-4.
Samantha Sismundo and
Sevana Zargarian lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, to Samantha Kaneta and Stephanie Quan.
Lau posted a big win at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Harris. Hemmerich won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Ingwaldson, Shaik won at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-0, over Kaneta and Sangria won at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Yeom.
Tiffany Leung lost a tough match at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 7-6, to Quan, while
Sydney Postal lost a tight one at No. 6 singles, 7-6, 7-6, to Koetterheinrich.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with a home match against Academy of Art beginning at 1:30 a.m.
