Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team received solid starting pitching and enough timely hitting to sweep a pair of games from Cal State Stanislaus Saturday at Warrior Field.
The Golden Eagles got a complete game from
David Armas in the opener and a solid outing from
Brandon Quintero in the nightcap and beat the Warriors, 6-2 and 7-4, in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State L.A. (14-8, 12-3 CCAA) moved into first place in the conference with the two wins.
Armas was outstanding in the opener, allowing only six hits and two runs and he needed to be strong because the Golden Eagles trailed 2-1 after six innings and were tied, 2-2, after seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles scored five times in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead and Quintero allowed only one run until tiring in the sixth.
Cedar Morgan came on to get the final five outs and earned his first save of the season.
Casey Ryan was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored in the opener, while
Scott Masik had a pair of RBI.
Jeremy Weber had two hits and drove in a run, while
Tyler Christian scored a pair of runs.
In the nightcap,
Cody Doyle was 2-for-5 with four RBI, while Masik was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Christian had three more hits in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles struggled for runs in the opener and found themselves in a game that was decided until the eighth. Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the second on a double by Christian, a sacrifice by
Ryan Cooperstone and a sacrifice fly by
Manny Acosta. Cal State Stanislaus scored single runs in the third and sixth runs to take a 2-1 lead, but the Golden Eagles tied it in the seventh and scored four times in the eighth to take the lead for good. Weber started the seventh-inning rally with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Ryan and scored on a sacrifice fly by Masik.
In the eighth, Christian and Cooperstone drew one-out walks and Acosta reached on an error to load the bases. Weber drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Ryan delivered a key two-run single. After Ryan stole second and third, Masik doubled to make it 6-2.
After getting the lead, Armas didn't allow a hit over the final two innings.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Doyle and then broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. Weber singled, Ryan was hit by a pitch and Masik loaded the bases with a bunt single. Garcia singled in one to make it 2-0 and
James Wharton singled in a run to make it 3-0. Doyle then delivered the big hit of the inning, a bases-clearing three-run double to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Cal State L.A. made it 7-1 in the fifth when Ryan reached on a bunt single, moved to third on a single by Masik and scored on a fielder's choice by
Niko Garcia.
Quintero allowed only one run until the sixth inning when the Warriors scored three times. Morgan got the final two outs of the sixth and then retired the Warriors without a run in the seventh for his first save of the season.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with Cal State Stanislaus in a single game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
