LA JOLLA – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team was unable to overcome a slow start in doubles and dropped another tight match to a nationally-ranked opponent.
 
The Golden Eagles lost all three doubles contests and fell to No. 19 UC San Diego, 6-3, Friday afternoon in La Jolla. Cal State L.A., which is ranked No. 25 in the nation in the latest ITA poll, split the six singles matches.
 
Cal State L.A. (6-8) has lost seven matches to teams ranked in the national top-20 in NCAA Division II and its other loss was to a Division I program.
 
Christie Lau picked up one of the Golden Eagles' points with a 6-2, 6-3 win over UC San Diego's Melissa Breisacher at No. 1 singles. Leora Hemmerich was also victorious at No. 2 singles, handing UC San Diego's Kyra Scott her first loss of the season, 3-6, 6-3, (10-8).
 
Tiffany Leung also won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over UC San Diego's Jacquelyn Davis.
 
Tiffani Shaik suffered a tough loss at No. 3 singles, losing to UC San Diego's Paula Chou in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
 
The Golden Eagles faced the big deficit after losing all three doubles contests. Lau and Hemmerich were beaten at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, by Breisacher and Scott, Shaik and Jill Sangria lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, to Chou and Jacquelyn Davis and Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian lost at No. 3 doubles to Tara Vanooteghem and Melinda Chu, 8-3.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at Point Loma Nazarene.
