Golden Eagles Complete A Series Sweep Of San Francisco

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team put the finishing touches on a solid opening California Collegiate Athletic Association series against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles got five strong innings from starter David Armas and a home run and four RBI from James Wharton to beat the Gators, 10-5, Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (6-5, 4-0 CCAA) completed a four-game sweep over San Francisco State (3-8, 0-4 CCAA).

The game was tied at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Eagles struck for six unearned runs aided by three San Francisco State errors. Cal State L.A. took a 5-3 lead when two runs scored on a pair of errors on a grounder hit by Scott Masik. A run-scoring single by Casey Ryan made it 6-3 and Wharton hit a three-run home run to make it 9-3.

Armas received no decision after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two. He allowed all three runs in the third inning and rebounded to shut down the Gators over his final two innings.

Sam Elgoual went the next 2 2/3 innings and picked up the win. He gave up three hits and one run. Tim Vranau got the Golden Eagles out of a two-out jam in the eighth inning and Cedar Morgan gave up two hits and a run while finishing up in the ninth. He got the final out of the game on a strikeout.

Trae Lopez went 5 1/3 innings for San Francisco State, allowing six hits and only three earned runs. Grady Espinosa was 2-for-4 for the Gators with two RBI.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on run-scoring doubles by Ryan Cooperstone and David Trejo. San Francisco State, though, took a 3-2 lead after scoring three times in the third. Espinosa drove in two of the runs with a double and a run-scoring single by Miguel Flores gave the Gators the lead.

After Cal State L.A. took its 9-3 lead, San Francisco State got a run back in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Carter Loud only to see Cal State L.A. restore its six-run lead in the bottom of the inning when Ryan bunted for a single, took second on a single by Cody Doyle, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with the opener of a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday in Pomona at 2 p.m.
