Golden Eagles Unable To Slow Down CS San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team ran into a hot-hitting Cal State San Bernardino squad Friday and dropped its second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association contest to the Coyotes.

The Golden Eagles surrendered 20 hits and fell to the Coyotes, 13-4, Friday at Fiscalini Field. Cal State L.A. (11-9, 7-7 CCAA) managed 10 hits, including a two-run home run from Jeremy Weber, but it wasn't nearly enough.

The Golden Eagles trailed only 3-2 after three innings, but Cal State San Bernardino (10-9, 7-7 CCAA) scored two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to build a 9-3 lead. The Coyotes then put the game well out of reach with another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Weber had three hits for the Golden Eagles, while Jesus Cuevas had two hits and two RBI. Brian Compton had two hits and scored a run.

Cal State San Bernardino got another home run from Edwin Mendoza, who had hit two in the opener on Thursday. Paul Eshleman also hit a home run for the Coyotes, while Ethan Chapman and Curtis Cassiese, the top two batters in the Cal State San Bernardino lineup, had four hits each. Chapman scored three runs and drove in one, while Cassise scored three times and drove in three runs. Mendoza also had three RBI. The win was the 500th for Cal State San Bernardino head coach Don Parnell.

David Arredondo got the start for the Golden Eagles and pitched four-plus innings before being lifted after a two-run home run with no one out in the fifth by Eshleman. Arredondo was charged with 12 hits and seven runs, six of them earned. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two. Nick Rodarte pitched one inning and gave up three hits and two runs. Jonathan Skura gave up two hits and one run over two innings and Elliott Russell gave up three hits and three runs in the eighth inning.

Casey McCarthy went seven innings for the Coyotes to pick up the win. He gave up eight hits and allowed four runs, three of them earned. He walked one and struck out six. Kyle Krogman pitched two scoreless innings while allowing two hits to finish the game for the Coyotes.

The Golden Eagles erased a 2-0 deficit in the top of the third inning when Weber connected with a two-run homer off McCarthy. A run-scoring single by Cuevas made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Coyotes scored four times in the bottom of the inning to break the game open.

Cuevas drove in the Golden Eagles' final run with a double in the seventh.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino with a doubleheader at Fiscalini Field beginning at 11 a.m.
