Golden Eagles Let Late Leads Slip Away In CCAA Loss

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team has seen this script written a few too many times for its liking.

The Golden Eagles saw leads in the eighth and ninth innings get away and Cal State San Bernardino rallied for a 7-6 victory Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Fiscalini Field. Cal State L.A. (11-8, 7-6 CCAA) has dropped five of its last six games, all by one run and four while watching its opponents walk off with the win.

James Wharton had two hits, including a 3-run home run in the third inning that gave the Golden Eagles a 4-1 lead. Daniel Duran was 1-2 with a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly that gave the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth. Brian Compton had a solo home run that gave the Golden Eagles a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning.

Cal State San Bernardino (9-9, 6-7 CCAA) had an answer every time the Golden Eagles took the lead. Edwin Mendoza had a pair of home runs for the Coyotes, including a solo shot leading off the ninth inning that tied the game at 6-6.

Ryan Santhon started for the Golden Eagles and went five innings. He allowed six hits and four runs while walking three and striking out four. Jacob Valenzuela went the next 2 2/3 innings and allowed an unearned run in the eighth inning. Cedar Morgan got the Golden Eagles out of an eighth-inning jam, but allowed four hits in the ninth, including the home run to Mendoza and a game-winning single to Andrew Harrison.

Ethan Chapman was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Brendan Day was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Mendoza was 3-for-4 with his two home runs and three RBI.

Cal State San Bernardino took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Golden Eagles scored four times with two outs in the fourth to take the lead. Duran had a run-scoring single to tie the game and Wharton followed with a three-run home run to give Cal State L.A. a 4-1 lead.

The Coyotes took advantage of a two-out walk and a two-run home run from Mendoza in the fourth inning to slice the lead to 4-3 and Cal State San Bernardino tied it with a run in the fifth.

Compton put the Golden Eagles ahead, 5-4, with a solo home run in the eighth, but the Coyotes tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

Cliff Quick reached base in the ninth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duran to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth, but the Coyotes go tthe game-tying home run from Mendoza, two straight singles, a passed ball, an intentional walk and game-winning single by Harrison to win it.

Cal State L.A. will continue the four-game conference series with a single game at Fiscalini Field on Friday. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday.
