LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got a record-breaking offensive performance from
Daniel Duran and plenty of other hits as well.
The Golden Eagles recorded 24 hits and scored 21 times in a 21-13 victory over Chico State Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (12-11, 8-9 CCAA) snapped a four-game losing streak and didn't show any rust – at least offensively – despite being off since March 10.
Duran tied a school record with six hits in a smashing 6-for-6 performance at the plate. He set a new program standard with four doubles and added his fifth home run of the season for good measure.
He was hardly alone, though, in succeeding at the plate.
Nick Rodarte went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI,
Scott Masik was 3-for-5 with three RBI,
Cliff Quick was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and
James Wharton and
Joe Park each slugged home runs.
The 21 runs are a season high for the Golden Eagles and marked the second time this season they have scored at least 20.
Chico State (23-8, 13-8 CCAA) pounded out 11 hits and scored 13 runs while keeping things interesting. The Wildcats scored three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pull to within 14-9, but Cal State L.A. got two runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth to break the game open.
Myles Dempsey drove in four runs for the Wildcats, while Cody Foster and TJ Yasuhara scored three runs each.
Rodarte worked three innings of solid relief for the Golden Eagles, holding the Wildcats to just two hits and one run over three innings to get the win.
Kameron Krise worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Justin Harr started for the Golden Eagles, but could only go four innings before he left with the bases loaded and no one out in the fifth.
Kagen Hopkins started for the Wildcats and allowed nine hits and eight runs in just 1 1/3 innings. Cal State L.A. scored all 21 of its runs in the first six innings.
Cal State L.A. pitchers walked eight and hit seven batters, while the Golden Eagle defense committed four errors.
The two teams combined for 35 hits and 34 runs and also stranded 25 runners on base.
The Wildcats scored twice in the first inning when Dempsey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Austin Prott lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left. Harr, though, was able to stand a pair of runners to limit the damage.
Cal State L.A. needed just two batters in the bottom of the first to tie the score.
Jesus Cuevas walked and Park followed with his first home run of the season to make it 2-2. Duran doubled and scored on a single by Quick to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good and Rodarte delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.
Cal State L.A. then exploded for seven runs in the second. Duran doubled in a run and Wharton followed with a two-run home run to stretch the lead to 7-2. Rodarte singled in a run to make it 8-2,
Brian Compton added a two-run double and Masik had a run-scoring single before the inning was over.
Cody Webber had a two-run double as part of a four-run fifth inning that brought the Wildcats back to within 14-9. Rodarte came on in relief of Harr and was able to leave the bases loaded.
The Golden Eagles then struck for two runs in the bottom of the inning with Masik and
Jeremy Weber driving in runs and added five more runs in the sixth.
Manny Acosta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Rodarte had a two-run double, Acosta scored on a wild pitch and Masik doubled in a run.
Cal State L.A. will continue the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday against Chico State at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
