Golden Eagles Falter Late In Series Opener With Gators

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team let one get away Friday in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles carried a 7-4 lead into the eighth inning, but the Gators rallied for one in the eighth and three in the ninth to post a come-from-behind 8-7 victory at Maloney Field. Cal State L.A. (10-5, 6-3 CCAA) dropped its second straight decision on an opponents' final at bat. San Francisco State (6-7, 5-4 CCAA) bunched together three walks and two hits in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.

Daniel Duran had another big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. James Wharton added three hits and two RBI. Scott Masik, Jesus Cuevas and Joe Park each scored a pair of runs.

San Francisco State had 11 hits in the game, including the game-winning two-run single by Mark Lindsay in the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Santhon worked six innings for the Golden Eagles and left with the lead. He gave up six hits and two earned runs while walking five and striking out three. Sergio Luna pitched a scoreless seventh for Cal State L.A., but Jacob Valenzuela surrendered a run in the eighth inning to make it 7-5 and Cedar Morgan was touched for the three runs in the ninth and was unable to pick up his third save of the season.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Cuevas was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on a groundout by Duran. San Francisco State, though, bounced back for three runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead. A two-run single by Danny Souza and a sacrifice fly by Thomas Wood put the Gators ahead.

Cal State L.A. tied it in the third. Park started the rally with a walk and scored on a double by Masik. Duran's run-scoring single tied it up.

The Golden Eagles then took a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Cuevas doubled and scored on a double by Duran. Manny Acosta drove in Duran with a two-out single.

After the Gators closed to within 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles scored twice in the seventh to extend their lead. Park doubled to start the uprising and Masik walked. Cuevas moved the runners over with a groundout and Duran was intentionally walked to load the bases. Wharton followed with a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 advantage.

San Francisco State, though, struck back with its four runs in its final two at bats.

Cal State L.A. will continue the four-game series at San Francisco State on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
