Golden Eagles Fall Flat In Series Finale With California Baptist

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team started its four-game series with California Baptist in fine fashion, but the end of it certainly left plenty to be desired.
 
The Golden Eagles were roughed up by the Lancers on Saturday, allowing 11 runs in the first five innings and falling flat, 11-0, at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (2-2) won the first two games of the four-game series by a combined 23-8 score, but lost the last two by a combined total of 18-2.
 
There wasn't much that went right for the Golden Eagles on Saturday. California Baptist scored four runs in the second, four more in the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the game away early. The Golden Eagles made four errors, walked eight batters and left nine runners on base.
 
Peter Straka had three hits for the Golden Eagles, while Cliff Quick had two hits. Joe Park had a double and James Wharton and Jeremy Weber each had singles.
 
California Baptist (2-2) had 10 hits. Andrew Montoya had two hits and scored three times, while Zack Esquerra had a three-run home run to highlight the four-run fourth inning.
 
The Golden Eagles committed three of their four errors in the fifth inning to help the Lancers score three times.
 
Cedar Morgan started for Cal State L.A. and allowed three hits and four runs in two innings. Justin Harr gave up five hits and four earned runs over the next three innings.
 
Erik Wallace pitched five shutout innings to get the win for California Baptist. David Herd blanked the Golden Eagles over the final four innings. Wallace allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven, while Herd allowed four hits, walked one and struck out two.
 
Nick Rodarte pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Cal State L.A., while Sergio Luna and Jacob Valenzuela retired all three batters they faced in one scoreless inning of work for each.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday with a road game at Biola. The Golden Eagles' next home game is Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Concordia.
