Golden Eagles Hang On For Another One-Run CCAA Victory

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team did just enough to post a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory for the second straight night.
 
The Golden Eagles pushed across four runs in the fifth inning and then held off Cal State Dominguez Hills, 6-5, Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 5-1 CCAA) also won Thursday's game by a 6-5 score.
 
Cal State L.A. got a solid start from David Arredondo, who took a 6-3 lead into the sixth. The Toros got a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to make it 6-5, but Nick Rodarte tossed scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eighth innings. Cedar Morgan then struck out three in the ninth after a leadoff walk to pick up his first save of the season.
 
Daniel Duran, who had four hits and four RBI in Thursday's win, added three more hits on Friday. Brian Compton also had three hits and James Wharton scored a pair of runs.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-6, 1-5 CCAA) got three hits from Drew Rodela and Matthew Young. Sako Chapjian drove in a pair of runs.
 
Nick Plantz started and went 4 2/3 innings for the Toros, while Brandon Quezada tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Chris Vopinek blanked the Golden Eagles in the eighth inning to give the Toros a chance.
 
The Toros got on the board first when Young doubled to lead off the game and scored on a fielder's choice.
 
The Golden Eagles tied it in the second when Wharton doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 3-1 lead in the third on a run-scoring single by Ricky Vasquez and a bases-loaded walk to Ernie Cabral.
 
The Golden Eagles closed to within 3-2 in the bottom of the inning when Scott Masik singled and later scored on an error and then took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth. Duran doubled and Wharton and Cliff Quick followed with walks to load the bases. Manny Acosta drove in one run with a fielder's choice and Compton singled in another to make it 4-3. Jesus Cuevas walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-3 and Masik was hit by a pitch to force in another run.
 
The Toros closed to within 6-5 in the sixth. Devon Ramirez reached on an error and later scored on a run-scoring single by Young. Chapjian drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.
 
Rodarte got out of the jam without any further damage and the Golden Eagles held on for the win.
 
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 11 a.m.
