Golden Eagles Unable To Complete The Series Sweep

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team worked extra in an attempt for a California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal State Stanislaus, but came up short.

The Golden Eagles dropped the series finale at Reeder Field, 4-2, when the Warriors scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning and went on to the victory. Cal State L.A. (7-3, 3-1 CCAA) was unable to capitalize on a strong start from Justin Harr and a game-tying double from Manny Acosta in the sixth inning.

Cal State Stanislaus (2-5, 1-3 CCAA) also got excellent pitching from starter Phil Quade and reliever Anthony Gotelli. Quade worked the first 5 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits and two runs, while Gotelli blanked the Golden Eagles over the final 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Gotelli allowed only two hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out five.

Daniel Duran, who hit a solo home run and had two hits at third base for the Golden Eagles, wound up taking the loss in relief. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, but was touched for two runs in the 10th.

Harr went the first six innings for Cal State L.A. and allowed only four hits and one earned run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five. Jacob Valenzuela bailed the Golden Eagles out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh and also retired the Warriors in the eighth inning.

While Cal State Stanislaus played well defensively and didn't commit an error, the Golden Eagles committed three errors and were also guilty of some mental mistakes that made their task tougher.

David Compton had three hits for the Golden Eagles, while Duran was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his second home run of the season. Acosta was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Justin Manci and Andy Yingling had two hits for the Warriors, who finished the game with eight hits. Both teams left eight runners on base.

Cal State Stanislaus opened the scoring in the fourth inning. With two out, Craig Beevers reached on an error, stole second and scored on a run-scoring single by DJ Arellano.

Duran tied the game for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth, but Cal State Stanislaus regained the lead in the sixth. Eli Davis singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Colton Beatty. Davis then stole third on a close play and scored on Yingling's run-scoring single.

Once again, the Golden Eagles came right back in the bottom of the inning. Duran singled, moved to second on a single by James Wharton, took third on a double play ball and scored on a double by Acosta off the right-centerfield wall.

Cal State L.A. then opened the door for the Warriors in the seventh, but escaped unscathed. Sergio Luna came on to pitch and Arrellano reached on an error to start the inning. Joe Medeiros followed with a single and Garrett Wright advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. The Golden Eagles then should have recorded an out after a failed suicide squeeze, but allowed both runners to return to their bases safely. Ross Gonsalves ended up walking to load the bases and Valenzuela came on to get Manci on a shallow fly ball and Davis on a strikeout to end the inning.

The Golden Eagles got a two-out double by David Compton in the ninth, but couldn't score when Jesus Cuevas sharp grounder was corralled by Beatty at second base.

The Warriors got a leadoff double from Manci in the 10th to set the stage for the winning rally. Davis put down a bunt and Duran's throw to third in an attempt to get Manci was unsuccessful. Beatty followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 and the final run scored on a wild pitch.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field with the opener of a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
