Golden Eagles Rally To Post Victory In CCAA Opener

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team took awhile to get going Friday afternoon in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, but the end result was certainly agreeable.

The Golden Eagles erased a 7-0 deficit and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 10-8, Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 1-0 CCAA) had 17 hits, including home runs from Jesus Cuevas and Jeremy Weber.

Cal State Stanislaus (1-2, 0-1 CCAA) erupted for seven runs in the top of the third inning, but Cal State L.A. tied the game at 7-7 after five innings and took the lead for good with a three-run rally in the seventh.

Cedar Morgan (1-1) pitched well in relief, allowing only one hit and one run over three innings to get the win. Jacob Valenzuela pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the save.

Cal State L.A. starter Ryan Santhon bounced back well after the seven-run inning by the Warriors in the third. All seven Cal State Stanislaus runs came with two out and came after Santhon hit a batter on an 0-2 pitch. Santhon retired seven of the last eight batters he faced to keep the Golden Eagles in the game.

Cuevas went 4-for-5 to lead the Cal State L.A. offense. He scored twice and hit a solo home run in the fifth. Daniel Duran and Cliff Quick each had three hits.

Andy Yingling had two hits and three RBI for Cal State Stanislaus, while DJ Arrellano had a three-run home run to highlight the seven-run third inning.

Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to its big lead with a big two-run rally in the third. After the Warriors got the first two batters on base, Santhon got two outs and had an 0-2 count on Craig Beevers before hitting him with a pitch to load the bases. Eli Davis beat out a slow chopper to short to drive in the first run of the game. Yingling cleared the bases with a drive to right-center to make it 4-0 and, after a single by Jordan Long, Arellano homered to left to make it 7-0.

Cal State L.A. immediately bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the inning off Cal State Stanislaus starter Byron Lemon. Cuevas and Peter Straka both singled and Duran lined a two-out, two-run double to make it 7-2.

The Golden Eagles added two more in the fourth on Weber's two-run home run and then tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Cuevas led off with a home run, Straka was hit by a pitch and came around to eventually score on a wild pitch and Quick tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Cal State Stanislaus regained the lead in the sixth when Justin Manci delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Eagles, though, struck for three runs in the seventh, aided by an error. A single by Manny Acosta drove in the tying run and David Compton broke the tie with a run-scoring single. Brian Compton then made it 10-8 with a run-scoring single to end the scoring.

The four-game series will continue on Saturday at Reeder Field with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
