Golden Eagles Beat Pomona, Clinch CCAA South Division

Box Score POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team put the finishing touches on its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division title on Sunday and will now set its sights on its second straight conference championship next week.

The Golden Eagles beat Cal Poly Pomona, 3-2, Sunday at Kellogg Field behind two goals from Halil Tozar and the game-winning score from Rosario Bras in the 85th minute. Cal State L.A. (11-3-3, 10-2-3 CCAA) won the CCAA South outright when Cal State Dominguez Hills was upset on Sunday at San Francisco State. Cal State L.A. finished with a conference-best 33 points to finish three points ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles, as the conference's No. 1 seed, will face No. 4 seed Cal State Stanislaus in a CCAA Championship Tournament semi-final game Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. finished with the most points in the conference for the second year in a row.

Cal State L.A., ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region poll, wrapped up the regular season by going 10-1-3 over its final 14 conference games after dropping its opener at Chico State.

Cal State L.A. never trailed on Sunday, but saw Cal Poly Pomona erase one-goal deficits twice, once in each half. The Golden Eagles had a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 13-0 edge in corner kicks.

Tozar put the Golden Eagles ahead in the eighth minute when he knocked in a shot from the top of the penalty box. Antti Arvola took a free kick after a Cal Poly Pomona foul and Andy Lopez sent a short pass to Tozar, who didn't miss with his attempt.

Cal Poly Pomona (3-11-3, 1-11-3 CCAA) tied it up before halftime when Matt Wright scored in the 42nd minute with assists from Abraham Gomez and Michael Torres.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the 66th minute when Rosario Bras stole the ball near midfield and sent Tozar in on a breakaway. Tozar scored for his fourth goal of the season.

Once again, though, Cal Poly Pomona tied it, this time in the 73rd minute. A long shot by Brandon Cortez found its way into an open net after Tony Bichai sent a deflection to Cortez with Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Waleed Cassis out of his goal.

Bras, though, put the Golden Eagles ahead for good in the 85th minute, heading in a cross to give Cal State L.A. a 3-2 lead. Tozar and Erik Vargas had the assists.

Tozar and Juan Ochoa both had four shots for the Golden Eagles, who had nine of their 14 shots in the first half.

Cal State L.A. will now set its sights on Cal State Stanislaus on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the CCAA Championship Tournament.
