Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team reclaimed its California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division lead with a big victory over a North Division foe.
The Golden Eagles got two goals from
Antti Arvola and knocked off Sonoma State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (10-3-2, 9-2-2 CCAA) leads the South Division by two points over Cal State Dominguez Hills with two road games remaining next week. The Golden Eagles also lead third-place UC San Diego by five points. The top two teams in each division advance.
Cal State L.A. stretched its unbeaten streak to five and is 4-0-1 during that strech. The Golden Eagles are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games.
The Golden Eagles celebrated Senior Day on Sunday and it was fitting that one of their six seniors, Arvola, notched both goals to lift the Golden Eagles to victory. Another senior,
Rosario Bras, picked up assists on both scoring plays, while a sophomore,
Halil Tozar, also had assists on the goals.
Sonoma State got its lone goal via a penalty kick in the 67th minute from Brian Angel that tied the game.
Both teams had 10 shots in the game, but the Golden Eagles enjoyed a big advantage in possession, which resulted in Sonoma State being called for 15 fouls to 4 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, including a 4-1 edge in the second half.
Arvola gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when he was the recipient of a through ball from Bras. Arvola controlled it and rifled a shot past Sonoma State goalkeeper Beau Diaz, off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. did a nice job of controlling the game until Sonoma State got a penalty kick after a foul in the box in the 67th minute. It was the second year in a row Sonoma State got an equalizer via a penalty kick. Last year, the Seawolves and Golden Eagles battled to a 1-1 tie.
This time, Arvola, Bras and Tozar made sure Cal State L.A. would get a second goal.
Tozar, who, for the second week in a row was able to overpower an opposing defense, won an individual battle and slipped a pass to Bras, who touched it right in front of the net to Arvola, who tapped it in for his seventh goal of the season.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there and preserved the lead.
Diaz made three saves for the Seawolves, while
Waleed Cassis made one save for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles honored their six seniors --
Antti Arvola,
Rosario Bras,
Erick Escobedo,
Andy Lopez,
Ricardo Sandoval and
Erik Vargas -- in pregame ceremonies.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road game at San Francisco State.
