Golden Eagles Have To Settle For 1-1 Tie With Coyotes

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was fit to be tied Sunday after having to settle for a 1-1 draw with California Collegiate Athletic Associaiton South Division opponent Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in an impressive first-half performance, but the Coyotes got the equalizer in the 62nd minute and neither team was able to score through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods. Cal State L.A. (9-3-2, 8-2-2 CCAA) picked up another point with the tie and continues to lead the CCAA with 26 points. Cal State San Bernardino (4-2-7, 4-2-5 CCAA) equalled an NCAA Division II record with its seventh tie of the season and second with Cal State L.A. The Coyotes have 17 points and are fourth in the CCAA South Division.

Cal State L.A. finished the game with a 23-9 advantage in shots, including a big 9-1 edge in the two overtime periods. Each team had three shots on goal. Cal State L.A.'s Waleed Cassis made two saves, while Cal State San Bernardino's Tanner Olinger made one save.

The Golden Eagles dominated the first half and could have built a much larger lead than 1-0. Cal State L.A. got on the board in the 10th minute when Luis Trujillo scored his first goal of the season. Erik Vargas set up the goal by heading the ball into the box, where Trujillo was open right in front of knocked quickly into the goal.

Cal State L.A. continued its pressure and had several more golden opportunities. Halil Tozar blasted a free kick off the post and Rosario Bras sent a rebound that seemed headed for the goal before Olanger made a diving stop to deflect the ball out of play.

Tozar, who seemed to win nearly every one of his individual battles with the Cal State San Bernardino defense, had another hard shot beat the goalkeeper, but bounce off the crossbar later in the half and Jordan Payne had a bid that sailed just wide of the far post before halftime.

The Coyotes, though, managed to stay close and, after some pressure early in the second half, got the equalizer in the 62nd minute. On a scramble in front, Leo Mendoza got to a loose ball and fired it into the net for his third goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles had most of the scoring chances in the overtime periods as Tozar and Adam Hughes were able to repeatedly shake free from the Coyote defense. Tozar had a good chance sail just over the crossbar after winning yet another individual battle deep in Cal State San Bernardino terriitory. Hughes had three good looks before the first overtime period was over. His best chance came after a hard shot was headed for the goal, only to be headed away at the last moment by a Cal State San Bernardino defender.

Cal State San Bernardino had an early corner kick in the second overtime, but could not get a shot. Tozar had another hard shot sail just wide of the near post, Mendoza had a good look for the Coyotes sail wide and Hughes had a header go wide before the final horn sounded.

Tozar had a match-high seven shots for the Golden Eagles, while Hughes finished with five.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Sunday with its final home game of the season, against Sonoma State, at 11:30 a.m.
