POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team has shown a flair for the dramatic so far this season and the Golden Eagles added another chapter Friday night.
The Golden Eagles, staring at a 1-0 deficit with time winding down, got a late goal from
Taylor Rivas and earned a 1-1 tie with Cal Poly Pomona Friday night in Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (5-1-3, 3-1-3) remained four points behind the first-place Broncos (6-2-1, 5-1-1 CCAA). A loss Friday would have dropped the Golden Eagles seven points back.
Cal State L.A., ranked 15
th in the nation, has scored 13 of its 20 goals this season in the second half or overtime. The Golden Eagles got an overtime to beat Cal State Stanislaus, scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to tie Chico State, scored twice again in the final 10 minutes to beat Cal State San Bernardino and then got the equalizer Friday in the 89
th minute.
The game-tying goal by Rivas, his first of the season, was set up by a throw-in from
Osvaldo Lopez. His throw-in from the right side was headed into the goal by Rivas from six yards away. The assist was the first of the season for Lopez.
The Golden Eagles were outshot, 23-18, and the Broncos had more corner kicks, 8-5. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Waleed Cassis made a season-high nine saves, while Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Andrew Todd made five saves.
Cal State L.A. might have enjoyed an even better result with a little better fortune in the opening minutes of the game. A bid by Timo Schwar just 2:05 into the contest hit the crossbar and bounded away.
Cal Poly Pomona scored the game's first goal in the 64
th minute on a free kick following a Cal State L.A. foul. Nicholas Jimenez curved in a shot from about 24 yards out for his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles began generating some chances and had a pair of corner kicks in the 81
st minute, but the Cal Poly Pomona defense didn't buckle. Cal State L.A. had a shot in the 85
th minute by
Marvin Sandoval go wide right and the Golden Eagles didn't get another shot off until the goal by Rivas.
Sandoval had a bid in the final minute of regulation following a Cal Poly Pomona foul and yellow card, but his show went wide.
Swope had a shot in the 93
rd minute get saved by Todd in the first overtime and a shot by Sandoval was high in the 98
th minute. Cassis made a pair of saves in the second overtime and a final shot by the Broncos in the final minute was blocked.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at San Francisco State.
