Golden Eagles Drop A Slugfest To California Baptist

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team lost in a slugfest Tuesday afternoon at Reeder Field.
 
The Golden Eagles and California Baptist combined for 30 hits and 21 runs in Cal State L.A.'s 13-8 loss in a non-conference game. Cal State L.A. (2-2) led 4-1 after one inning and 4-2 after three innings, but California Baptist (7-1) scored 11 runs over the next four innings to take control of the game.
 
Daniel Duran had four hits for the Golden Eagles, while Brian Compton drove in three runs. Joe Park, Brian Moon and Chris Matzner had two hits each for Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles finished with 14 hits.
 
Brian Sharp went 4-for-5 with five runs batted in to lead California Baptist's 16-hit attack. Sharp hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to complete the Lancers' scoring. Zach Esquerra hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and drove in three runs for the game.
 
Kevin Odom also had two hits and three RBI, while Matt Marnati scored three runs.
 
Jesse Arreola overcame a rocky first inning and went six innings to get the win for California Baptist. He allowed all four of his runs in the first inning. Todd Jones tossed two scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out four.
 
Cal State L.A. used seven pitchers in the game. Elliott Russell and Duran each pitched a scoreless inning. Starter Nathan Pickett allowed five hits and three earned runs in three-plus innings.
 
The Golden Eagles took a 4-1 lead after scoring four times in the bottom of the first. Arreola almost got out of the inning without allowing a run, but Chad Nacapoy beat out an infield hit with two outs and nobody on. Moon followed with a single and Noe Flores walked to load the bases. Compton promptly doubled down the left-field line to drive in two runs and Manny Acosta delivered a two-run single later in the inning.
 
California Baptist tied the game with a two-run single in the fourth from Odom and then took a 5-4 lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Chris Joranco. The Lancers made it 9-4 with a four-run sixth inning that included a two-run single by Sharp and a two-run home run by Esquerra.
 
The Lancers got four more runs in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Odom and Sharp's three-run home run.
 
Cal State L.A. got four runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring. Duran scored on a bad relay throw from the outfield following a double by Park and Moon followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Park. Moon later scored on a wild pitch and Noe Flores scored the final run on a balk.
 
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. at Reeder Field.
