LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a winning start before heavy rains and hail came to put an end to the day.
The Golden Eagles won the opener against San Francisco State, 11-4, on Saturday and took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning in the second game before it was suspended by rain.
When play resumes on Sunday, the Golden Eagles will have two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The suspended game will be completed and the two teams will then play a nine-inning, seven-inning doubleheader. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Cal State L.A. (6-3, 1-0 CCAA) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and rode the strong starting pitching of
Wally Goodline to victory. Goodline worked seven solid innings, giving up six hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out six.
He wobbled a bit in the fourth inning, surrendering a three-run home run to Trevor Pasiecznik that cut the Golden Eagle lead to 7-4. He finished strong, though, blanking the Gators over the next three innings before turning things over to
Cliff Quick. The Cal State L.A. reliever pitched two scoreless innings to wrap up the game.
Pasiecznik drove in three runs for the Gators (5-2, 0-1 CCAA), while Jason Ochart had a hit and scored two runs.
Cal State L.A. scored six times in the opening inning to take the early lead. Duran and
Joe Park both singled and
Brian Moon hit a one-out double to drive in Duran.
Jordan Castro reached on a fielder's choice while Park scored and
Andrew Allen followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Flores, Acosta and Duran added run-scoring singles before the inning was over. The Golden Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate.
San Francisco State got one run back in the second on a run-scoring double by Chris Schindler, who was later thrown out at the plate by left fielder Castro while trying to score on a single by Drew Andersen.
The Golden Eagles made it 7-1 in the third when Park singled in a run, but the Gators jumped back into the game when Pasiecznik hit his first home run of the season to make it 7-4.
Cal State L.A. made it 8-4 with a run in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Duran and the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 11-4 with one run in the seventh on a single by Duran and two more in the eighth on a double by Flores and single by Acosta.
The Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead in the second game behind five scoreless innings from
David Arredondo. Duran had two more hits, Moon had two hits and two runs scored and
Chris Matzner had two RBI.
The teams waited out one rain delay before another, more sustained rain caused the suspension in the fifth inning.
