TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team is in the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship game for the first time since 2006 thanks to a spirited effort and some more late-game heroics.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Sergio Cedano in the 86th minute and beat host Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, Friday in Warrior Stadium. Cal State L.A. (13-1-5) stretched its unbeaten streak to 11 games with the victory and moved into Sunday's championship match against Chico State.
Cal State L.A. is seeking its first tournament championship.
The Golden Eagles survived on Friday despite playing a man down for the final 53 minutes of the game. With the Golden Eagles leading, 1-0,
Rosario Bras received a straight red -- the team's first of the season -- and was sent off.
Cal State L.A. had taken a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when
Jason Swope scored his 10th goal of the season with an assist from
Antti Arvola. With the extra man, Cal State Stanislaus started generating chances in the second half and eventually got the equalizer in the 68th minute on a goal by Juan Alvarez.
Cedano, though, put the Golden Eagles ahead for good when he headed a pass from
Taylor Rivas inside the far post from about eight yards out for his second goal of the season.
Cal State Stanislaus had a 17-16 advantage in shots, although the Golden Eagles had a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Bill Hambelton made eight saves and the Warrior defense made a couple of saves as well. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Waleed Cassis made four saves, including a couple outstanding stops to post the win. The Golden Eagle defense also got credited with two saves.
Cal State L.A. had a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half, which began well for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had a decided edge in possession and chances and took the lead in the 25th minute on Swope's goal. Arvola got off a solid shot that was stopped, but Swope was able to get to the loose ball about 10 yards from the goal and knocked it into the net.
The Golden Eagles kept control until the straight red in the 37th minute. Cal State Stanislaus began generating some chances and Cassis was called on to make four of his six saves in the second half.
Cal State L.A. will now face Chico State on Sunday for the conference title. The Wildcats, the champions of the North Division, beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-0. The game will be broadcast by Comcast and be available on the CCAA website.
