LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team maintained its unblemished defensive standing this season with its fifth straight shutout victory.
The Golden Eagles used a three-goal flurry in the second half to pull away for a 3-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (5-0, 4-0 CCAA), ranked No. 1 in the nation, has posted all five of its victories by shutout.
For the fourth time in five games, the Golden Eagles were locked in a 0-0 tie at halftime. The Golden Eagles got a penalty kick goal by
Brennen Brodersen in the 68th minute to break the tie.
Cal State L.A. then added two more goals in a six-minute span to put the game away.
Julian Ringhof and
Taylor Rivas scored the other goals for the Golden Eagles.
Sam Campanelli made six saves for Cal State Monterey Bay (0-4-1, 0-3-1 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 20-1 advantage in shots. Cal State Monterey Bay's best scoring chance came in the second half when Tyler Dapello's attempt was snared by Cal State L.A. goalie
James Irwin.
Cal State L.A. also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The game was a defensive struggle in the first half, although Cal State L.A. had a few good scoring chances in a 10-minute span. Campanelli deflected a shot by
Gonzalo Pulgar about 16 minutes into the contest. Chris Rangel had a good chance in the box sail wide in the 20th minute.
Osvaldo Lopez had the best chance in the first half, but his point blank shot hit the outside of the near post and glanced away.
Lopez later drew the penalty kick when he was fouled by Campanelli in the box. Brodersen knocked home the penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 just 55 seconds later when Ringhof pounded home a header off a cross by
Joe Davis.
Rivas completed the scoring five minutes later when he headed in a nice corner kick from Lopez.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road match at Cal Poly Pomona.
