CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured a long and lost afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles dropped a marathon 10-9 decision in the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Toro Field and then came back to lose a 12-2 decision in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (13-16, 11-9 CCAA), after beating the Toros, 16-2, in the series opener on Thursday, dropped the final three games in the series, two of them by identical 10-9 scores.
The loss in the opener was a tough one for the Golden Eagles, who rallied to take a 9-8 lead by scoring four times in the top of the ninth inning. The Toros, though, tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth and then won it with a run in the 11th.
Cal State L.A. was blown out quickly in the seven-inning nightcap. Cal State Dominguez Hills struck for eight runs in the second inning and four more in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles collected 15 hits in the opener, including three each by
Mario Ramirez and
Sam Wiley.
Mark Sunga had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while
Brendan McQuaid also had a pair of hits.
Cal State L.A. found itself down, 8-4, after seven innings, but scored once in the eighth and four times in the ninth to take the lead. The Golden Eagles were able to chase Bret Montgomery, who no-hit them in Los Angeles in February, after 6 2/3 innings by roughing him up for nine hits and four runs. They continued the assault on the Toros' No. 1 starter, Kody Kurowski, who they knocked out of Thursday's game in the second inning. On Saturday, they got four hits and five earned runs off Kurowski in 1 2/3 innings. To top it off, they tied the game with a hit off reliever Matt Phillips, who finished them off in Friday's game with two scoreless innings.
Despite all that, the Golden Eagles came up short.
The Golden Eagles made it 8-5 after an unearned run in the eighth. A single by Ramirez, a walk to
Matt Miraldi and a single by
Jordan Castro loaded the bases in the ninth. Sunga delivered a two-run double to slice the deficit to 8-7, which brought in Phillips. McQuaid greeted him with a run-scoring single to tie it and a squeeze bunt by
Joe Park gave the Golden Eagles a 9-8 lead.
Abel Medina singled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth and then added the game-winning single in the 11th.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles found themselves down, 12-0, after four innings. Park tripled in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brett Whalen to break the shutout bid and Wiley added a run-scoring triple to drive in Ramirez for the second run.
David Fair pitched six strong innings for the Toros to pick up the win.
Nathan Halverson and Sunga pitched scoreless innings for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday night with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
