CARSON – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had one big rally left in it Thursday and it enabled the Golden Eagles to pick up a non-conference victory against a California Collegiate Athletic Association foe.
The Golden Eagles struck for five runs in the seventh inning and went on to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 8-6, Thursday at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (2-1) won its second straight game, although, because of the recent rains, the Golden Eagles had to wait seven days between victories.
Sam Wiley slugged a two-run home run to break a 6-6 tie and put the finishing touches on the game-turning five-run uprising in the seventh. Cal State L.A. trailed 6-2 after five innings, but scored once in the sixth and five times in the seventh to get the win.
Wiley had a pair of hits and drove in three runs to highlight a 13-hit Cal State L.A. attack.
Matt Miraldi had three hits and scored twice,
Mario Ramirez had three hits and scored once and
Cliff Quick had a pair of hits and drove in one.
Carlos Leyva, Abel Medina and Kyle Pond had three hits each to lead a 15-hit attack by Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3). Kevin Pillar drove in three runs for the Toros.
Matt Stropoli blanked the Toros over 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win, while Quick got the final five outs to record his first save. Quick got a bases-loaded double-play groundout to end the eighth inning and then got another double-play grounder to end the game in the ninth.
Andrew Klausmeier, the third of four Cal State Dominguez Hills pitchers, took the loss.
Cal State L.A. starter
Wally Goodline was touched for 12 hits and six runs in his second start of the season, but he was able to make it through five innings. Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Kody Kurowski, a first-team All-CCAA selection last season, gave up four hits and three runs in six strong innings. After allowing two runs in the first, he didn't give up another until the sixth and left with a 6-3 lead.
Both teams wasted little time getting on the board. Cal State L.A. got a pair of runs in the first when Miraldi singled and
Chris Matzner was hit by a pitch. Ramirez followed with a double to make it 1-0 and Matzner scored on a sacrifice fly by Wiley.
The Toros tied it in their half of the first on a run-scoring double by Pond and an infield single by Pillar that scored a run.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 3-2 lead in the third on a double by Medina and a single by Pond and made it 4-2 in the fourth on a single by Brian Sturgis and a run-scoring single by Dean Benavidez. The Toros tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Pillar.
Kurowski, who retired 16 batters in a row, finally allowed a base runner when Ramirez singled with two outs in the sixth. Wiley walked and Quick followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to make it 6-3.
Max Moya doubled to begin the five-run Cal State L.A. rally in the seventh.
Jordan Castro singled and Moya scored on a run-scoring groundout by
Brett Whalen. Miraldi singled and a single by Matzner drove in Castro to make it 6-5. Miraldi later came around to score on a wild pitch and, after Matzner took third on a passed ball, Wiley hit a two-run home run to left to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
The Toros threatened in the eighth and loaded the bases with one out, but Quick came on and got Steve Carrillo to hit into an inning-ending double play. Pillar walked to lead off the ninth, but Quick got the next three outs to end the game.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with another single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The four-game non-conference series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
