SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had to work overtime before securing a win in its California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles scored seven times in the top of the 10th inning and beat the Otters, 16-9, Friday at the Otter Baseball Field. Cal State L.A. (21-12, 13-8 CCAA) climbed into a tie for third place in the CCAA with Cal State Stanislaus, one-half game behind second-place Sonoma State.
Travis Tartamella hit home runs in the ninth and 10th innings to lead an 18-hit Cal State L.A. attack.
Mario Ramirez also had a home run, a solo shot that started the Golden Eagles' seven-run 10th inning explosion.
John Dunn pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed one run to pick up the win.
Danny DeSantiago got the final two outs to finish up.
Isaac Morales worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed 13 hits and six runs. He walked one and struck out a season-high 11. Cal State L.A. scored four times in the seventh of the inning to take an 8-4 lead, but the Otters scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and twice in the eighth to tie it.
Tartamella hit a solo home run to give the Golden Eagles a 9-8 lead in the ninth, but the Otters got a sacrifice fly by from Daniel Barras to send the game into extra innings.
Ramirez led off the 10th inning with a home run to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Tartamella followed with a two-run home run,
Toby Davis contributed a two-run single,
Brendan McQuaid had a run-scoring double and Ramirez ended the barrage with a sacrifice fly.
Four Cal State L.A. pitchers -- Morales,
Camron Collard, Dunn and DeSantiago -- combined to strike out 16 batters.
Matt Miraldi had four hits and drove in three runs for the Golden Eagles. Tartamella had three hits and drove in four runs, Davis had three hits and scored three times and
Chris Matzner had a pair of hits and scored three runs.
The Golden Eagles trailed, 3-1, after four innings, but scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Jesus Campos was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Matzner singled. Davis reached on an error to load the bases and McQuaid followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. After Ramirez was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Miraldi delivered a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Andrew Marquardt had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 4-4 before the Golden Eagles struck for four runs in the seventh. Ramirez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, Miraldi singled in a run,
Danne Quiroz walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and Campos was hit by a pitch to force in the final run.
Marquardt hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 8-6 and drive Morales from the game. The Otters added a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to tie it and set up the dramatics of the final two innings.
The Golden Eagles and Otters will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday.
