SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a simple cure for its late-inning woes that cost it Thursday's California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles scored eight times in the first inning and never looked back in a 14-8 win over the Coyotes Friday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Cal State L.A. (16-9, 9-5 CCAA) pulled back into a third-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino (13-10, 9-5 CCAA) and both clubs are just one-half game behind conference-leading Cal State Stanislaus and second-place UC San Diego.
Cal State L.A., still stinging from a tough 5-4 loss to the Coyotes on Thursday, erupted for eight runs and seven hits in the opening inning on Friday. Cal State San Bernardino countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but Cal State L.A. starter
John Mitchell regrouped and blanked the Coyotes until the sixth inning. By then, the Golden Eagles had built a 11-4 lead.
Cal State San Bernardino struck for four runs in the sixth to make it 11-8, but the Golden Eagles added three runs in the ninth inning to put the game away.
Brian Dearth,
Danny DeSantiago and
John Dunn combined to blank the Coyotes over the final 3 2/3 innings on four hits.
Cal State L.A. had 17 hits and the two teams combined for 22 runs and 29 hits.
Chris Lloyd had four hits and three RBI to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Chris Matzner and
Travis Tartamella each had a pair of hits and scored three times.
Brendan McQuaid,
Toby Davis and
Max Moya also had two hits each.
Jesus Beltran had four hits and scored two runs for the Coyotes, while Julio Torres had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Bryan W. Hart pitched 7 2/3 innings of strong relief for the Coyotes.
Cal State L.A. started quickly in the first.
Matt Miraldi was hit by a pitch to open the game and McQuaid singled him to third.
Mario Ramirez then squeezed home Miraldi with a bunt single. Moya doubled in a run to make it 2-0 and, after Tartamella was hit by a pitch,
Eric Quintero singled in two runs to make it 4-0. Matzner drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Lloyd followed with a triple to give the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead. Miraldi added a triple to make it 7-0 and McQuaid's double drove in Miraldi to make it 8-0.
The Coyotes promptly cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but the Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 9-4 in the third inning when Matzner singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lloyd.
Matzner doubled in a run in the fifth and scored on a single by Lloyd to make it 11-4 before Cal State San Bernardino struck for four runs in the sixth while driving Mitchell from the game. Dearth, though, came on and got the final two outs of the inning to preserve the lead.
Cal State L.A. completed the scoring with three runs in the ninth. Tartamella doubled in a pair of runs and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Mitchell gave up six earned runs in his 5 1/3 innings of work and got the win to improve to 4-2. Dearth only gave up one hit and struck out one in his 1 2/3 innings, while Dunn worked the final two innings and gave up two hits.
The two teams will conclude the four-game conference series with a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
